Stranoch wind farm

Stranoch wind farm is to be located in Dumfries and Galloway, between New Luce and Barrhill and construction commenced on site in May 2024.

Stranoch wind farm will have 102MW capacity and consist of 20 turbines.

EDF power solutions UK has been working closely with local stakeholders and residents to minimise impact as far as possible and this regular dialogue will continue as the project gathers pace. The company is prioritising working with Scottish and local businesses where possible, including civil contractors RJ MacLeod completing the enabling works and using the local quarry for stone.

Family-run I&H Brown have been awarded the contract to complete the civil engineering works for the construction phase and Vestas will supply and install the wind turbines. Powersystems UK will complete the electrical work on the site, from installation to testing and commissioning of the high voltage electrical infrastructure and control building.

Next steps – wind turbine deliveries to site – October to December 2025

Wind turbine parts, including blades and turbine sections, completed delivery to site from the Port of Cairnryan at the end of 2025.

Stranoch Wind Farm Sponsorship Fund

The latest round for the Stranoch Wind Farm Sponsorship Fund closed for applications in early 2026. A total of 17 local organisations have been awarded money through this round.

Amongst the recipients are a summer pony camp in Stranraer which will open up avenues for young people to attend; a local Wigtownshire group for people with disabilities and additional support needs to promote its services and expand its reach; as well as grants to several groups to cover costs of events for demographics such as the elderly and those experiencing social isolation.

In addition, monies have also been awarded to assist with Galloway Mountain Rescue Team’s vehicle refurbishment to improve the technology on board; providing PPE to Stranraer-based charity Galloway Action Team for volunteers to be seen and safe while working in the community; providing free tickets for young people to attend a fully-stage opera through Absolute Classics and providing a trauma-trained doctor for a Dumfries and Galloway horse event in June.

Keep up to date with project developments

EDF power solutions UK has a text messaging service and email database set up to notify residents about the turbine deliveries and any changes to the schedule that may impact on their journeys. If you would like to be added to the database to receive updates or find out further information about any aspect of the project please email stranochwindfarm@edf-re.uk.

A proportion of the wind farm’s electricity generation will be bought by major retailer Tesco, with the clean energy due to power the equivalent of more than 80 average sized supermarkets for a year. Another proportion will be bought by BAE Systems and provide clean energy to power around 40 per cent of its current UK energy demand, supporting major technology programmes including the production of Type 26 frigates for the Royal Navy in Glasgow. South East Water will take a further portion of the site’s electricity generation. Corporate Power Purchase Agreements (CPPAs) have been facilitated by EDF Business & Wholesale.
