Where you’ll find our battery storage

EDF power solutions is set to play an important role in helping to modernise our grid to ensure that the UK and Ireland can transition away from fossil fuels and make the most of new renewables coming online.

We have identified sites in strategic locations across the UK and Ireland, connected directly to the transmission network. Where possible we also explore the possibility of co-locating battery storage with another renewable technology, such as solar, to ensure we are making the most of available connections to the grid.

Why is battery storage important?

Battery storage forms a key part of the UK’s journey to net zero, helping to modernise the national electricity grid and ensuring homes and businesses can be powered by green energy, even when the sun isn’t shining or the wind has stopped blowing.

For example, the UK has the largest installed capacity of offshore wind in the world, but the ability to capture this energy and purposefully deploy it can increase the value of this clean energy; by increasing production and potentially reducing costs.

Everyday engineers at National Grid and electricity grids worldwide must match supply with demand. Managing these peaks and troughs becomes more challenging when the target is to achieve net zero carbon production. Fossil-fuel fired plants have traditionally been used to manage these peaks and troughs, but battery energy storage facilities can replace a portion of these so-called peaking power generators over time.

The UK government estimates technologies like battery storage systems – supporting the integration of more low-carbon power, heat and transport technologies – could save the UK energy system up to £40 billion ($48 billion) by 2050, ultimately reducing people’s energy bills. In turn, battery storage helps to reduce both the use of natural gas in these peak periods, reducing carbon emissions, as well as reducing curtailment costs when renewables are generating significant volumes of energy.

More renewable generation

Batteries help to manage variations in renewable generation, storing surplus electricity when wind and solar power are plentiful, and releasing it when there is a shortfall.

Increased system resiliency

Batteries respond rapidly to sudden changes in electricity supply and demand, acting as a ‘first line of defence’ to keep the energy system stable.

Balancing electricity supply and demand

To keep power supplies flowing, electricity supply and demand must always be equal, or ‘balanced.’ Batteries are highly flexible assets which charge or discharge as needed to ensure balance.

Future-proofing the electricity system

Change is inevitable. Our batteries will help to ensure that the energy system is as flexible as it needs to be to accommodate necessary changes.

Project Spotlight

Energy Superhub Oxford

Energy Superhub Oxford is a UK Government-backed project which is pioneering an integrated approach to decarbonising power, transport and heat. The Superhub will help Oxford achieve net zero by 2040.

The project showcases a powerful network that combines rapid EV charging, hybrid battery storage, low carbon heating and smart energy management. The project provides a blueprint for towns and cities to cut carbon emissions and improve air quality.
