EDF Renewables UK welcomes the success of two projects that were bid into the Contract for Difference (CfD) auction round six held by the UK government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
The successful projects are Longfield solar farm and Heathland wind farm. Combined, these projects will deliver around 400MW of clean, renewable electricity, providing a significant contribution to the UK’s net zero ambitions.
The CfD scheme is a UK Government mechanism which has been purposefully designed to support the generation of low-carbon electricity. It does this by providing developers with a stabilised price for their electricity output, protecting them from fluctuating wholesale prices. This incentivises investment by developers and also shields consumers from paying support costs when electricity prices are high.

Longfield solar farm in Essex received a Development Consent Order in June 2023; success in the CfD auction round is another positive step forward for the project ahead of construction starting next year. Once operational, it will provide enough electricity to meet the needs of around 90,000 homes*.
Heathland onshore wind farm is a consented 14 turbine wind farm located in South Lanarkshire that will supply enough low carbon electricity to meet the average annual needs of around 44,700 homes*.
