Dorenell Ranger Service is launching its 2025 events programme, offering a variety of engaging activities for people of all ages to explore the natural and cultural heritage of Moray.
The Ranger Service, based at Dorenell Visitor Centre in the Cabrach, Moray, is run by EDF Renewables UK, one of Scotland’s leading developers of renewable energy. Last year, the service welcomed over 500 participants to its events, and this year’s schedule promises even more opportunities to connect with nature.
The 2025 programme features a mix of returning favourites and exciting new additions, including guided walks, family-friendly activities, and cycling tours. Highlights include a wading bird walk, bumblebee talk, a ranger-led walk between the iconic whisky towns of Aberlour and Dufftown, a family cycle to Elf House Cave, a guided Cycle to Steplar and Glenfiddich Trailhead, as well as a stargazing and nocturnal animals walk with the Cabrach Trust.

Whether you’re interested in wildlife, hiking, cycling, or simply exploring the beauty of Moray, there’s something for everyone. Most events are free, however there is a charge for Moray Walking Festival walks and cycles. The money for this will be donated to Alzheimer’s Society. All Moray Walking Festival walks should be booked through https://www.moraywalkoutdoorfest.co.uk/

The current programme, until the end of July, is detailed below:
- 5 April – Wading Bird Walk: Explore the birdlife of Upper Cabrach. Join us to spot skylarks, curlews and lapwings Don’t forget your binoculars!
- 11 April – Bumblebee Talk: Join Annie Ives from Bumblebee Conservation Trust to learn more about the identification and ecology of bumblebees, focusing on some of the rare and special bumblebees found in the Cairngorms National Park.
- 4 May – Open Day: Connecting with your local rangers is a great way to explore nature and discover more about your area! Come and chat with us to hear more about our projects and events.
- 7 May – Guided walk – Aberlour to Dufftown: Join us for a ranger-led walk through two beautiful whisky towns. We’ll take the service bus from Dufftown to Aberlour and then enjoy a scenic walk back.
- 30 May – Guided cycle Dufftown loop: Bring your bike along for a guided cycle from Dufftown along the railway path to Aberlour and back to Dufftown.
- 14 June – MWF Steplar Glenlivet walk: This is a challenging hike bookable through the Moray Walking and Outdoor Festival website. We will take in some fantastic views and might even see a golden eagle.
- 18 June – MWF guided cycle: Explore our waymarked trails by bike for Moray Walking Festival. Book through Moray Walking and Outdoor Festival website. This is an ebike ride for confident cyclists.
- 20 June – MWF Evening walk to Blackwater Lodge: Come and hear about the wildlife an history of the Cabrach on this evening walk booked through Moray Walking and Outdoor Festival website. The walk is 11km in total.
- 16 July – Family cycle to Elf House Cave: Get the family out in the great outdoors for the school holidays. This is for children and families age 9+ on tarmac and land rover track.
