Indian Queens battery storage

  1. Project Type: Battery storage
  2. Country: England
  3. Location: Cornwall
Project Status:
  1. Planned
  2. Consented
  3. In Construction
  4. Operational

We are developing a 50MW battery storage project located adjacent to the Indian Queens substation in Cornwall.

The project secured planning consent in February 2022 as a joint planning permission with an adjacent project developed by a third-party developer.  A new planning application was submitted in Summer 2023 which  solely for our project, to reflect the final equipment selection and layout, whilst discharging ourselves from the conditions of our original consent. This planning application was approved by Cornwall Council in April 2024.

With consent granted the project moved into the construction stage shortly after in Spring 2024. There are four key phases of the development: site mobilisation, construction, commissioning and finally grid energisation when the battery is connected to the national grid. Our anticipated schedule of works is shown below with the entire scheme of works expected to be complete by autumn 2025.

Battery storage systems help to manage variations in renewable generation, storing surplus electricity when wind and solar power are plentiful, and releasing it when there is a shortfall, helping the electricity system remain balanced.

Once complete, the Indian Queens battery will be able to store enough electricity to power over 100,000 homes. As a result, this area will be home to vital infrastructure that is crucial in supporting the UK in the shift away from fossil fuels.
