Johnstown Solar and Storage Park

Planning permission was granted in August 2020 for a solar PV development in the townlands of Johnstown and Busherstown, Co. Carlow. In late 2020, EDF Renewables Ireland acquired this solar project with the intention to apply for planning permission to expand the project to a c.32MW solar and storage farm, which would connect into the national electricity grid at the Carlow 110kV substation.

Battery storage is essential to help Ireland achieve its climate action targets and create an electricity system that is clean, affordable and secure. The battery incorporated as part of Johnstown Solar and Storage Park will help improve the resilience of the electricity system. By storing energy from renewable sources when it is most plentiful, such as particularly sunny or windy days, it can then be used when it is most needed, helping the electricity system to operate more efficiently, and powering Irish homes and businesses with renewable energy.

Subject to the outcome of this new planning application, we intend to begin construction of the project in mid-2028, with a targeted completion date of 2030.

Once the project is nearing construction, we will devise a comprehensive construction and traffic management plan in order to minimise any disruption to local residents.
