Liddesdale wind farm

Liddesdale wind farm is a proposed onshore wind farm comprising up to 59 turbines located across two sites within Wauchope Forest and Newcastleton Forest in the Scottish Borders.  

EDF power solutions UK is in the initial stages of the proposed project’s development with a scoping announcement made in June 2023. 

Engagement with the local community has been prioritised as EDF power solutions UK continues dialogue about the 400MW development and how this project could help to support the local economy and actively contribute towards Scotland’s renewable energy aspirations. 

About the project   

The project is at an early stage, and an Environmental Impact Assessment Scoping Report was submitted to the Energy Consents Unit in June 2023, which sets out EDF power solutions UK’s approach to assessing the environmental considerations for a wind energy development on the site.

The revised plans were put forward during a second round of exhibitions with feedback sought from the community and stakeholders. This updated design includes a reduction in turbine numbers from 80 to 59 as well as changes to routes that could be used to reach site to minimise impact on the roads and residents.

Project timeline 

We are continuing project development and there will be many opportunities to engage with the team and inform the design of the project as we progress. 

Working with the community  

EDF power solutions UK’s community consultation on Liddesdale wind farm has so far involved public exhibitions and community events throughout the summer in 2023 and 2024 to share its initial and then updated proposals, as well as providing regular updates to residents and other interested parties. 

In Scotland, EDF power solutions UK delivers £5,000 per megawatt of installed capacity per year for the wind farm’s operational lifetime, in line with Scottish Government guidance. If approved, Liddesdale wind farm will provide direct benefits to the local area through a long-term community benefit fund and community investment opportunities. 

Ensuring Liddesdale wind farm also opens up opportunities to develop and deliver green skills and jobs in the area, the team will explore opportunities for skills development and utilisation of the local supply chain. 

Environmental studies from Scoping – June 2023
