Gate Burton Energy Park is a consented new solar energy farm, co-located with battery storage. The project includes grid infrastructure to connect to the National Grid and any necessary and appropriate environmental mitigation.
A grid connection agreement has been secured which would allow us to export or import up to 500MW of electricity to and from the National Grid. The proposed generation capacity of the scheme means it is a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP).
We see ourselves as being a long-term partner of the local community throughout the lifetime of the scheme. We are committed to developing a scheme that our neighbours might appreciate for the benefits it will bring at a local level, whilst delivering on the national need for renewable energy.
The site received planning consent on 12th July 2024.
Once preparation and construction begins, we will keep members of the local community informed about works going on around the site. This will often include direct communication via letters to near neighbours as well as notices in the local newspapers. We will also post notices on this webpage and these can be found in the project documents section.
Commencement of work is due to begin in 2027 with surveys and some preparation work being undertaken.in 2025 and 2026.
EDF power solutions UK, previously EDF Renewables, has acquired the Gate Burton Energy Park project in Lincolnshire from Low Carbon.
Gate Burton is a consented 500MW project, having received approval from the Secretary of State, Ed Miliband, on 12th July 2024. Once operational, the project will be capable of delivering enough solar capacity to power approximately 160,000 homes while also providing critical flexibility to the grid through integrated battery storage.
Gate Burton joins EDF power solutions UK’s growing portfolio of nationally significant solar and storage projects, including Longfield in Essex – which received consent in June 2023 – as well as two other large-scale projects currently progressing through the planning process: Springwell Solar Farm in Lincolnshire and Rosefield Solar Farm in Buckinghamshire.
Capable of providing enough clean, secure energy to power over 160,000 homes every year, Gate Burton Energy Park will make an important contribution to the UK’s future energy mix.
Electricity will be generated using PV panels across Gate Burton Energy Park. In the interests of making the solar farm highly efficient, the PV panels will face south and be fixed on support struts driven into the ground.
We are looking to deliver significant biodiversity net gain and will preserve existing field patterns and boundaries, as well as existing trees, in developing the layout of the panels.
The plans for Gate Burton Energy Park were developed by Low Carbon who saw the project through from origination to planning consent, which was granted on 12th July 2024 by the Secretary of State.
In July 2025, EDF power solutions acquired the project from Low Carbon and is now responsible for the continued development, construction and eventual operation of the project.
We have set up a new project team specifically for Gate Burton and our focus is currently on discharging the DCO conditions, As part of this work we will be working with relevant Council planning officers and other statutory authorities.
The electricity generated by the energy park will be exported into the existing national electricity transmission system at National Grid’s Cottam substation in Nottinghamshire.
Given the proximity of Gate Burton Energy Park to the proposed Island Green Power Cottam and West Burton solar projects, we will work together to maximise opportunities for reducing overall environmental and social effects, in particular on communities in proximity to the grid connection corridor, and sensitive heritage and ecological receptors adjacent to the River Trent.
The shared connection corridor comprises an area in which we will locate our 400KV connection from Gate Burton Energy Park into Cottam substation, and Island Green Power will locate its 400kV connection to Cottam substation and its 132kV connection to West Burton.
Within this area, the installation of common elements (i.e., the cable ducts and associated installation activities) that would accommodate three cable connections in the future results in environmental and community benefit by reducing the amount of disturbance; in particular the level and frequency of construction activity.
We want the project to have a positive impact locally – for the community, for the environment and for the economy. This has been an important focus for our business as we are here for the long-term.

As the project prepares to start construction in 2027, a Community Liaison Group will be established. The group will be chaired by a dedicated Community Liaison Officer and will be attended by representatives from organisations in the area as well as elected officials.
