Nant y Maen is a proposed onshore wind farm near Tregaron

EDF power solutions UK has early-stage plans to develop an onshore wind farm east of Tregaron in Ceredigion.

Nant y Maen Wind Farm could have an installed capacity of up to 150MW and generate enough green electricity to power the equivalent needs of 146000 homes average UK households*.

This ambitious initiative has the potential to support Wales’ transition to clean energy, bolster energy security and deliver local economic opportunities.

We have started initial ecological and other feasibility studies, and have submitted an application to erect meteorological masts to collect wind speed data to Ceredigion County Council. Events to share information and obtain early feedback from people living and working locally will be held in the autumn, the dates and details will be announced shortly.

If the project receives planning consent and is constructed, we will establish a Community Benefit Fund as part of our long-term commitment to the local area. The Community Benefit Fund will see funds from the project go towards supporting positive local initiatives and activities.

Nant y Maen is defined as a Significant Infrastructure Project, and we will apply for an Infrastructure Consent under the Infrastructure (Wales) Act 2024. The planning application will be submitted to Planning and Environments Decisions Wales and examined by an independent planning inspector. The decision whether to grant planning consent will be made by the Welsh Ministers.

Timeline

  • May 2026 – Scoping Request submitted to Planning and Environments Decisions Wales, early engagement with key stakeholders.
  • Early autumn 2026 – Informal four-week consultation and speaking to the local community.
  • Throughout 2027 – Ongoing studies and assessments.
  • Autumn 2027 – Statutory pre-application consultation.
  • 2028 – Submission of the planning application to PEDW.
  • 2028-2029 – Examination of the application by the Planning Inspector, recommendation to the Welsh Government Minister.
  • 2029 – Decision by the Welsh Government Minister.
